ESD Protection Measures in PCBA Assembly

Nov 06, 2023

During the PCBA process, it is important to take appropriate ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) protection measures to prevent damage to electronic components and circuit boards from electrostatic discharge. The following are some common ESD protective measures:

1. ESD floor and workbench

The use of ESD floors and workbenches, these surfaces are electrically conductive and can discharge static electricity from the body and equipment to the ground. This helps prevent static buildup.

2. Static Eliminators

In the workbench and production areas placed in the static eliminator, such as static eliminator, static floor mats, so that operators can regularly release the static electricity on the body.

3. ESD personal protective equipment

Staff should wear appropriate ESD personal protective equipment, including ESD gloves, ESD shoes and ESD clothing, in order to reduce static buildup on the body.

4. Working environment control

Control the humidity of the work environment, because humidity can affect the buildup of static electricity. Maintaining moderate humidity levels can help reduce the occurrence of ESD events.

5. ESD safety education and training

ESD safety education and training for staff to understand the hazards of ESD and how to properly handle sensitive electronic components and circuit boards.

6. Electrostatic shielding bags and containers

When storing and transporting sensitive components and assemblies, use electrostatic shielding bags and containers to prevent damage caused by electrostatic discharge.

7. Electrostatic ground wire

Use static ground wires to connect various equipment and workstations to a common ground to ensure that static electricity can be safely discharged to the ground.

8. ESD testing and monitoring

Regular testing and monitoring of the work area's ESD protection performance to ensure that they are still effective.

9. Electrostatic discharge sensitive equipment marking

Mark ESD levels on electrostatic discharge sensitive equipment and components to help staff handle them correctly.

10. Work procedures and processes

Develop appropriate work procedures and processes, including the handling of ESD-sensitive components, cleaning procedures, etc., in order to minimize the risk of ESD.

11. Electronic component packaging

During the assembly process, ensure that the electronic components in the electrostatic shielding packaging, and open the packaging as early as possible when needed to reduce the time the components are subjected to static electricity in the environment.

By taking these ESD protection measures, you can reduce the risk of electrostatic discharge events in PCBA assembly, thereby improving the reliability and quality of electronic products.
